The IR Magazine Think Tank – Canada 2019 is an invitation-only event exclusively for senior corporate, in-house IR professionals. It is free to attend and our unique format enables participants to network extensively, discuss, debate and dissect topical issues affecting IR.
What makes our format so unique?
It is far removed from the traditional conference set-up as the event consists of a series of panel sessions followed by roundtable discussions on select IR issues. These interactive sessions are broken up by short, snappy best practice briefings from top-rated IROs. All discussions are confidential and none of the participants’ comments are attributed. Senior portfolio manager
Sam Baldwin is Portfolio Manager, Canadian Equity for Guardian Capital LP (GCLP). He joined GCLP in 2007 as portfolio manager on the systematic strategies team. In 2013 he transitioned into Guardian’s Canadian Equity team, focusing on the large-cap Core Canadian equities strategies. His career in the financial services industry began in 1999 when he joined Invesco Trimark as an Associate, Strategy and Communications. Sam subsequently assumed the role of Project Manager, Office of the CEO, in the Taiwan office of Invesco. This role was followed by Fund Manager and Product Director, Asian Equities with Invesco Perpetual in the UK, subsequent to which he joined Guardian. Sam graduated from University of British Columbia with a BA (Honours) and is a CFA® charterholder.

Ian leads Algonquin’s newly formed sustainability team which was established in May, 2019 to develop the company’s sustainability strategy and to ensure its full integration into the company’s operations and corporate strategy. Ian joined Algonquin in January 2016 as Vice President of Investor Relations and led the company’s investor relations efforts during a period of material growth. During Ian’s tenure at Algonquin, the Company’s investor relations efforts have been recognized with several IR Magazine Canada Award nominations (winner – Best Utility IR (2016) and Best IR by a Management Team (2019)), and as a finalist for the IR Magazine Global Awards in 2018. Ian has over 20 years of buy-side and sellside leadership experience, with a specific focus in renewable energy, electric utilities, and early-stage Cleantech companies. Ian has an Economics degree from the University of Western Ontario, is a CFA Charter Holder, and is currently enrolled in the CIRI/Ivey Investor Relations Certification Program.

Kevin joined IHS Markit Corporate Solutions through acquisition of Ipreo in 2018 and is a founder and Managing Director of the North America Advisory division which provides market intelligence and advisory services to over clients encompassing over 60% of the DJIA, over 55% of the S&P 500 and 35% of the NASDAQ 100. During the course of his career, Kevin has provided senior management and investor relations teams with strategic counsel and insight into factors impacting shareholder engagement, equity market activity, and investor sentiment. Before joining Ipreo, Kevin worked in the Corporate Advisory Service Group at Thomson Financial where he was a Director managing the firm’s Energy Group. Kevin received his B.B.A. from Loyola University New Orleans.

Ms. Wagenaar is an award-winning Investor Relations Executive with 12+ years of experience across a variety of business sectors for publicly traded companies. She brings extensive capital markets experience and exceptional relationships within the investment community and brings a highly strategic, innovative approach to investor relations that is customized and calibrated based on each company, industry and situation. Ms. Wagenaar serves as the VP, Investor Relations & Corporate Communications for Guyana Goldfields since joining in mid-2009. She is responsible for all investor relations, corporate communications and media relations for the Company and single-handedly implemented the first investor relations program in the Company’s history and was instrumental in organizing global roadshows helping raise over C$500 Million in secondary equity and debt offerings. Ms. Wagenaar is a Certified Professional in Investor Relations from the Richard Ivey School of Business and completed her undergraduate degree at the University of Western Ontario. She sits on the Ontario Board of Directors of the Canadian Investor Relations Institute and is a frequent industry speaker and an involved IR advocate within the profession.

A 25-year Wall Street veteran, Mr. Rose co-founded and served as the Chief Executive Officer of Dahlman Rose & Company, an investment bank focused on transportation, commodities and infrastructure. Under his leadership, Dahlman Rose grew from 6 to 200 employees across five offices in the United States and Canada and expanded its research coverage from a single sector to over 20 discrete sectors focused around the theme of our natural resource economy and supply chain. Mr. Rose advocated a collaborative and horizontally-integrated approach to research coverage which has since been widely adopted. The firm executed over 75 securities offerings for public and private companies, raising in excess of $10 billion for its clients. Dahlman Rose & Company also acted as the sole advisor or co-advisor on numerous high-profile M&A transactions, including the largest public company acquisition in the history of the marine transportation sector. The firm was sold to Cowen Group, a publicly-listed financial services firm, in April 2013.

Prior to founding Corbin Advisors, Rebecca was a vice president with Thomson Reuters and began her career as a stock surveillance analyst, tracking institutional trading and money flows for Media & Entertainment and Cable companies. In 2003, she established and led Thomson’s perception study business and, in 2005, was recognized for her contribution to the company and honored with the Award of Excellence for Entrepreneurial Spirit.
Ms. Corbin received a B.A. in Business Management from Washington College, where she graduated cum laude and with thesis honors. She was the inaugural recipient of the Schottland Business Leadership Award and presented with the Business Management Award, the department’s highest continuing honor. Rebecca was honored with the Alumni Horizon Ribbon Award for outstanding leadership, service and scholarship in 2011 and the Hartford Business Journal’s 40 Under Forty Award in 2016. In 2018, she was the inaugural recipient of the Junior Achievement of Southwest New England Entrepreneurial Award. In 2019, Rebecca received Hartford Business Journal’s Annual Women in Business Award, which recognizes outstanding Connecticut-based female CEOs, entrepreneurs and senior-level executives who have mastered their industry and are admired by the business community.
Ms. Corbin is a member of the National Association of Professional Women (NAPW) and the National Investor Relations Institute (NIRI), where she has held several leadership positions.
Ms. Corbin serves on the boards for Washington College, The Bushnell Center for the Performing Arts and The Hartford Symphony Orchestra. She is President of the Jim and Rebecca Loree Foundation, a not-for-profit charitable organization that she co-founded with her husband in 2009. Rebecca resides in Central, CT with her husband and their four daughters.

Mr. Smith joined Rose & Company from Barclays, where he was a Director in the firm’s institutional equity sales team and had primary responsibility for the firm’s Canadian institutional sales desk and served as the primary liaison between Barclay’s corporate access team and Canadian issuers. He joined Barclays in 2012 after having worked at RBC Capital Markets for the prior 20 year period. At RBC Capital Markets, he was a Managing Director in charge of the firm’s New York based Canadian sales desk. Throughout his career, Mr. Smith has worked closely with public companies to execute targeted investor marketing programs to reach a broad group of prominent institutional investors throughout North America.

Ms. Jenni Piette has over 7 years of progressively senior experience in mining investor relations and corporate communications. She holds a Bachelor of Science Degree (Distinction) in Geology and is a Certified Professional in Investor Relations under CIRI/Ivey School of Business. Ms. Piette currently serves as Head of Investor Relations at GT Gold Corp, a Canadian gold and copper exploration company. Prior to this, she worked as Manager of Investor Relations at gold producers Teranga Gold and Richmont Mines. Ms. Piette began her career in investor relations with Detour Gold during project development in 2012, prior to which she worked as an outreach educator for PDAC Mining Matters. She has also owned and operated a retail storefront in Toronto and worked in the private school system as a high school teacher.

Steve leads the Ontario TSX Company Services team. The team provides guidance for publicly traded companies on a number of topics, including: Compliance, Trading, Investor Relations, Disclosure and Corporate Communication. He’s been with TMX since 2012.
Colleen Johnston retired from TD Bank Group in 2018. Prior to this, she was Group Head Direct Channels, Technology, Marketing and Corporate & Public Affairs. Colleen also spent over ten years as Group Head Finance, Sourcing and Corporate Communications, and Chief Financial Officer, TD Bank Group.
Colleen began her career in 1982 with Price Waterhouse. She spent 15 years with Scotiabank in various senior positions, including CFO of Scotia Capital. She joined TD in March 2004 and in 2005 was named the Bank’s Chief Financial Officer. At TD, she was actively involved in promoting diversity and inclusion in the workplace as Chair of the Women in Leadership Committee for ten years.
Colleen graduated from York University in Toronto with a bachelor of business administration. She received her chartered accountant designation in 1984 and in 2006 was elected a Fellow Chartered Accountant (FCA), the highest designation conferred by the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Ontario, recognizing her outstanding career achievements and dedication to community activities.
Colleen has received numerous top industry honours as a senior finance executive including Canada’s CFO of the Year in 2012. She was recognized by Women’s Executive Network as one of Canada’s Most Powerful Women three years in a row and inducted into Canada’s Most Powerful Women: Top 100 Hall of Fame in 2007. In 2011, for the third year in a row, she was named one of the 25 Most Powerful Women in Banking by American Banker. In 2013, Colleen was awarded the Catalyst Canada Honours in the Business Leader Category. Colleen has received honorary degrees from St. Mary’s University and York University.
Colleen is Chair of Unity Health Toronto, a hospital network that includes St. Michael’s Hospital, St. Joseph’s Health Centre and Providence Healthcare. She’s also a member on the Board of the Shaw Festival and a member of the Dean’s Advisory Council at the Schulich School of Business.
Colleen currently resides in Toronto with her husband. She enjoys travelling, spending time with her family and an active lifestyle.

Ben Ashwell is the editor of IR Magazine and Corporate Secretary, covering investor relations, governance, risk and compliance. Prior to this, he was the founder and editor of Executive Talent, the global quarterly magazine from the Association of Executive Search and Leadership Consultants. Before moving to the US, Ben was the vice president and editor at Executive Grapevine, overseeing a daily news website, ten annual supplements and HR Grapevine, one of the UK’s leading HR and talent management magazines.
Yvette Lokker is the President & CEO of the Canadian Investor Relations Institute (CIRI). Yvette joined CIRI in 2008 as the Director of Communications and Professional Development and was promoted to Vice President in the fall of 2011. In addition to her many accomplishments, Yvette was responsible for establishing the first investor relations certification program in North America in partnership with the Richard Ivey School of Business. Prior to joining CIRI, Yvette was the Manager, Investor Relations at MDS Inc. where she assisted in developing and directing the investor relations strategies and activities for seven years. Yvette has a BSc. in Chemistry and a Business Diploma from Wilfrid Laurier University. She has completed the Strategic Management of Investor Relations program at the Richard Ivey School of Business and the Canadian Securities Course.
