IR Magazine Series - Women in IR
San Francisco

Tuesday, September 19, 2017

Wine & Wall, San Francisco, CA

About our research

Last year we uncovered a glass ceiling in the IR world: our global IRO survey revealed that while the number of men and women who work in IR is roughly equal, two thirds of heads of IR positions go to men.  Such stats are depressingly familiar throughout the business world. Within IR, however, the news came as a surprise: IR has always been an industry with many women in senior positions. Despite this, the study shows more needs to be done to improve career opportunities for women in investor relations.

  • Globally, 67% of top IR jobs are held by men
  • Across four major indices – S&P 100, TSX 60, FTSE 100 and DAX – 25% of companies have a female IR head
  • 36% of female IR heads take home more than $200,000 a year – compared with 47% of male IR heads

We included this research in an entry for the Willis Towers Watson Media Awards and are happy to say we won the prize of best institutional investment publication! We will be continuing to bang the drum for gender equality and highlight the issue of equality and inclusion.

This evening is part of our new global series of events aimed at improving the role and value of women in IR. These evening events will feature prominent female speakers from IR and beyond, as well as panel debates designed to explore how to address the issues and put pressure on the industry to confront it. Book your seat now!

NIRI San Francisco is comprised of approximately 160 investor relations practitioners from the San Francisco Bay Area, resulting in a dynamic mix of IR professionals dedicated to promoting the practice of investor relations within the business and financial communities. The chapter hosts monthly educational events, social programs and seminars for current and prospective members, covering industry topics and challenges relevant to today’s investor relations officer.

Coalition for the homeless

IR Magazine is supporting the Coalition for the Homeless’ First Step program through our Women in IR events. First Step gives homeless and low-income women the skills and confidence they need to achieve financial independence. A major part of this is to prepare women for employment. Often these women cannot afford a professional outfit to wear to interviews.
